LINGID

Davis Creek Reservoir is located in Valley County Nebraska, approximately 5 miles southeast of North Loup City. This lake is one of the most surreal places I have visited on my travels.

The reservoir has 1,145 surface acres of water, but irrigation causes the water level to fluctuate dramatically… sometimes as much as 40 or more feet per year. This has created around the shoreline massive clay beaches that stretch around the entire lake (see photos). Also a great deal of the lake is not vehicle accessible, due to several miles of roads around the lake that are barricaded off. An information bulletin board at the lake explains the mechanics of the lake and emphasizes that the lake was created for irrigation as its main purpose, and recreation as a secondary purpose.

The Nebraska State Game and Parks Commission lists the reservoir as containing Bluegill, Bullhead, Carp, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Walleye and Yellow Perch. Fishing was good at the lake, with several good sized crappie and bass taken on the northern inlet areas. We also picked up some very large groups of fish toward the dam, but were unable to take any from that area.

Facilities at the lake include boating access, restrooms, picnic facilities, and primitive camping. If you are traveling through the area, I recommend stopping, if just for a look at a very different lake.
