LINGID

Hackberry Lake is located in Cherry County approximately sixteen miles south of Valentine Nebraska. It is one of several lakes in the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. Boating is allowed on the lake, but only with nonpowered craft and craft with electric motors.

The lake has 680 surface acres of water, Minnows are prohibited in the refuge as bait, but dead smelt is allowed. Possession of fish not taken from refuge waters is unlawful. This like many of the refuge lakes id subject to a considerable amount of weed growth in the summer months. This makes fishing from shore difficult in the later months.

The Nebraska State Game and Parks Commission lists Hackberry Lake as containing Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Pike and Yellow Perch. This lake is one of the particularly good lakes within the refuge and produced some very large pike upon our last visit.

Facilities at Valentine National Wildlife refuge are primitive, and are geared for day use only. There are however facilities available at nearly Merrit reservoir.
