Harlan County Reservoir is located approximately 2 miles south of Republican City, and adjacent to the cities of Alma and Orleans, in Harlan County. The lake is approximately 23,100 acres, with 75 miles of shoreline. Water level at the lake varies due to irrigation use from season to season, however, the boat ramps are well maintained.
The Nebraska State Game and Parks lists the lake as having good fishable populations of Channel and Flathead Catfish, Crappie, Northern Pike, Walleye, White Bass, and Wiper. Anglers should note that there is a 18 inch length limit on Walleye and a 15 inch length limit on Largemouth Bass. This Lake is extraordinary fishing, and has been regularly at the top of Nebraska Master Angler producing bodies. This lake is a such a productive body of water that all species can be easily obtained from shore as well as from boats. The majority of the fishing we participated at this lake was for walleye. We trolled with crankbaits and minnows, and caught several good sized fish in an early morning outing. We also later in the afternoon took several Wiper from shore using minnows and nightcrawlers in the Sindt Point area.
Facilities at Harlan County Reservoir include primitive and modern camping, boat ramps, restrooms, and two commercial marinas.
