Johnson Lake State Recreation Area is located just south of Lexington Nebraska on U.S. 283. Johnson Lake is a 2,060 acre lake, and one of Nebraska's most popular recreation areas. This is good as that the facilities and nearby areas are well developed, but in the mid-summer months the lake and State Recreation Area may be very congested, and subject to heavy fishing pressure.
The Fishing at Johnson Lake is fair to good and tends to be somewhat seasonal in some respects. Bluegill are fairly consistent year round, with a small sporadic bass population in areas of the lake. The Nebraska State Game and Parks Commission lists the lake stocked with Channel and Flathead catfish, Crappie, Drum, Walleye, and White Bass. There were several large populations of mid to deep water fish we located on our graph, but had little luck retrieving them. The most successful area and technique was on the east side near the Tri-County supply channel, Using a boat about 25 feet from shore, casting inward using small spinners or nightcrawler rigs.
The facilities at Johnson Lake include multiple boat ramps, fish cleaning stations, and 2 wheelchair accessible fishing piers. The Camping facilities are at Johnson Lake are excellent. There are both modern and primitive camping facilities with showers and drinking water available. There are up to 110 gravel pads with electrical hookups available in multiple locations around the lake.
