Pelican Lake is located in Cherry County approximately sixteen miles south of Valentine Nebraska. It is one of several lakes in the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. Boating is allowed on designated refuge lakes, but is restricted to non powered craft or craft with electric motors.
This lake has approximatley798 surface acres of water and is excellent fishing. Like all Valentine Refuge lakes this lake is subject to summer aquatic weed growth, but not nearly as bad as some of the other nearby lakes. The Nebraska State Game and Parks Commission lists Pelican Lake as containing Black Bullhead, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Pike and Yellow Perch. Minnows are prohibited for use on wildlife reservation lakes, but dead smelt are allowed.
Facilities at the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge are limited to day use only, but facilities are available at nearby Merrit Reservoir.
