Sherman Reservoir is located approximately 4 miles east of Loup city Nebraska. It is located on Oak
Creek, and was created by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in January 1962. It has approximately 2,600 surface acres
of water and nearly 65 miles of shoreline. It is administered by the Middle Loup Division of the Nebraska-Kansas
project. The Farwell Irrigation District is responsible for the operation and water release from the dam. The dam
provides water for approximately 50,000 acres of Nebraska farmland.
Facilities at the lake include both primitive and modern camping facilities, dump stations, fresh water,
boat docks, restrooms, and picnic facilities. There is also a full service marina on the south east part of the lake.
The Nebraska State Game and Parks Commission lists the lake as containing Channel Catfish, Crappie,
Flathead Catfish, Northern Pike, Walleye, and White Bass. Anglers should note there is a 15 inch length limit on
Largemouth Bass and a 18 inch length limit on Walleye and possession of only one Walleye over 25 inches in bag.
The lake has a very large population of crappie and is easily taken on everything from nightcrawlers to
small jigs and lures. There is also a fair population of large walleye that can be taken off the dam. The lake each
year since 1989 has yielded an average of 50 master angler awards each year.
